Introduction

After nearly 50 years of development, China has established a complete production system for beta lactam antibiotics. In 2012, almost all β – lactam antibiotics (except for those within the Zhongli period) could be produced in China at a very low cost, with penicillin production ranking among the top in the world and being exported in large quantities to the international market; Cefotaxime antibiotics are basically self-sufficient and can also strive for some exports.

In 2012, China was able to produce all intermediates that are compatible with β – lactam antibiotics on its own. Except for the partially imported parent nuclei 7-ACA and 7-ADCA of semi synthetic antibiotics, all side chain intermediates can be produced and exported in large quantities.

Taking phenylacetic acid, the main intermediate of β – lactam antibiotics, as an example, there are nearly 30 phenylacetic acid manufacturers in China with a total annual production capacity of about 20000 tons. But most enterprises are relatively small in scale, with the largest producing 2000 tons per year and others producing hundreds of tons per year. In 2003, the total demand for phenylacetic acid in China was about 14000 tons, with a consumption structure of penicillin G accounting for 85%, other pharmaceuticals accounting for 4%, spices accounting for 7%, and pesticides and other fields accounting for 4%.

With the development of domestic industries such as spices, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides, the demand for phenylacetic acid will further increase. It is expected that by 2005, China’s pharmaceutical industry will consume about 14000 tons of phenylacetic acid, the pesticide industry will consume 500 tons, and the spice industry will consume about 2000 tons. In addition to the consumption in other fields, it is expected that the total demand for phenylacetic acid in China will reach 18000 tons in 2005, so it is necessary to strengthen the customization of pharmaceutical intermediates.
