Introduction

Be it on a car or motorcycle: Wheels are the eye-catcher on every vehicle. However, in addition to their aesthetic appeal, these parts also must withstand a lot of stress: Rain, ice and weather, road salt, UV radiation, aggressive cleaners, stone chips, etc.
The challenge is to combine function with a stunning appearance. Powder coating can be a solution! Powder coated wheel rims offer properties such as corrosion protection, weather resistance, chemical resistance, and impact resistance – combined with amazing colors, effects, and finishes!
Key Benefits that make Powder Coat worth it
What makes powder coating so popular for wheels and other automotive parts?
Extreme Durability: The thick, cured coating better withstands daily wear, weathering, road debris, and cleaning chemicals than standard paints. It provides superior protection against scratches, chips, and fading.
Long-Lasting Finish: Professionally applied powder coating can easily last 3-5 years or longer under regular driving conditions. With proper maintenance, a quality powder coat can last up to 20 years.
Unlimited Customization: Powder coating can be formulated in any color imaginable. You can choose gloss, matte or chrome finishes. Unique textures and chameleon effects are possible too.
Eco-Friendly Process: Powder coating produces nearly zero paint waste or VOC emissions compared to standard liquid paints. Any oversprayed powder can be recovered and reused as well.
Cost-Effective Choice: Considering the extreme durability and custom looks it offers, powder coating provides excellent value compared to constantly repainting wheels. It’s worth the extra initial investment.
For all these reasons, powder coating is quickly becoming the first choice over repainting for customizing wheels and providing them with superior protection that lasts.

Types of powder coatings
Powder coatings come in various forms that can be used to achieve the perfect finish for customers. We can provide customized powder coatings in various colors. With the thousands of powder coat colors, you can totally transform the way that your vehicle looks. It can also protect your rims and accessories for longer and add a subtle extra dimension of customization.
Brighter colors can add a pop to the car’s appearance, but these can collect tar and dirt from the road that dulls their appearance over time. Similar issues can arise with matte finishes since car owners often struggle to keep these clean.
Darker colors with satin or high gloss finishes are among the most common options since these can conceal dirt, debris, and minor surface flaws better. Although some will opt for a more bespoke finish, which can include bright glitters or multiple colors mixed.
Epoxies are very tough with the best corrosion resistance, but they fade fast outdoors because of their poor UV resistance, so they’re best used as primers. Hybrids, epoxy and polyester are sometimes used to improve smoothness, but again, they don’t perform well outdoors.
Polyesters are great all-rounders; they’re affordable, flexible, with lots of finish options. Standard types work indoors and short-term outdoors, while super durable polyesters can last up to 10 years.
Fluoropolymers are the premium option, offering unmatched weather, colour, and gloss retention (up to 20 years), but are costly and specialised. Urethanes give a very smooth, durable finish with strong chemical resistance, making them the perfect material for use on alloy wheels, but they do cost considerably more and require careful application.

Powder properties
| Characteristics | The product has excellent leveling, strong adhesion and good salt spray resistance. |
| Specific gravity | 1.2~1.8g/cm’ (depending on the formula and color) |
| Particle size | Depending on the purpose, the standard type has an average particle size of 35~40 microns, less than 10 microns powder <10%, and greater than 100 microns powder <0.5%. |
| Storage stability | Powder coatings for aluminum wheels should be stored in a dry and ventilated room below 35°C, and avoid direct sunlight. If stored in an air-conditioned room, the powder must be stored at room temperature or the same (temperature) as the spraying equipment before use to avoid moisture. Under this condition, the powder can be stably stored for 12 months. If it is exceeded, it must be re-tested. If the result meets the requirements, it can still be used. |
