Web-Pattern Powder Coating: Types, Properties, Applications and Common Problems

News 2026-08-17

Textured powder coatings conceal substrate defects with a decorative effect that “decorates flaws,” while also providing corrosion resistance, weather resistance, and mechanical protection. They are widely used in furniture, appliances, automotive bumpers, and metal coils. This article systematically introduces the concept, characteristics, principles, functions, application areas, selection considerations, and solutions to common problems of textured powder coatings. It focuses on the unique effects of textured powder coatings to help readers better understand what they are, their characteristics, and applications.

What Are Web-Pattern Powder Coating

Web-pattern powder coating is an artistic thermosetting powder coating. Its core characteristic is that a three-dimensional, uneven web-like or crackle-like texture forms on the surface after curing, creating a distinctive decorative effect.

Characteristics of Web-Pattern Powder Coating

The main characteristics of web-pattern powder coating are as follows.

Three-Dimensional Decorative Effect: After curing, it forms three-dimensional raised and recessed textures such as crackle and web patterns, creating a strong artistic appeal while effectively covering surface defects such as scratches and pinholes on the substrate.

Chemical Texturing Mechanism: The texture is created by an amine-blocked sulfonic acid catalyst in the formulation, which causes differences in the curing rates between the surface and interior of the coating, resulting in regular shrinkage wrinkles. The higher the catalyst dosage, the smaller the pattern and the lower the gloss.

Combined Protective Function: In addition to decoration, it retains the basic protective properties of powder coatings, such as excellent abrasion resistance, scratch resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance. However, it has higher process control requirements and costs more than ordinary smooth coatings.

Formation Principle of Web-Pattern Powder Coating

Web-pattern powder coating is mainly achieved through the following methods:

Formulation Basis: A crosslinking system consisting of polyester resin (P) and tetramethoxymethyl glycoluril (TMMGU) is used.

Catalyst Activation: An amine-blocked sulfonic acid catalyst is added. During baking, the catalyst preferentially releases active acid on the coating surface, causing the surface to cure and crosslink faster than the interior.

Stress-Induced Texturing: During curing, the surface cures and shrinks first, while the interior cures and expands later. The resulting stress difference drives the coating surface to form three-dimensional web-like and crackle-like wrinkles.

Functions of Web-Pattern Powder Coating

The main functions of web-pattern powder coating are reflected in the following aspects.

  1. Decorative and Beautifying Function

After curing, it forms three-dimensional raised and recessed textures such as crackle, web, and water-wave patterns, giving products a unique artistic appearance and premium texture while significantly enhancing product grade and brand recognition. As an artistic powder coating, it provides industrial products with a differentiated appearance compared with ordinary smooth coatings.

  1. Surface Defect Concealment

The uneven texture can effectively conceal minor defects such as scratches, pinholes, welding marks, and grinding marks on the substrate surface, reducing the requirements for substrate smoothness.

This means that fine surface preparation processes, such as detailed grinding, can be reduced, improving product yield while lowering manufacturing costs.

  1. Basic Protective Function

In addition to decoration, it retains the excellent mechanical properties of powder coatings, providing basic protection such as abrasion resistance, scratch resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance to protect the substrate from physical damage and environmental exposure. The coating is strong and durable and is suitable for products that require both appearance and protection.

Applications of Web-Pattern Powder Coating

Web-pattern powder coating has a wide range of applications, including the following fields:

  1. Construction and Furniture

It is commonly used for aluminum alloy doors and windows, architectural aluminum profiles, office furniture, metal furniture, outdoor patio furniture, and other applications, providing a natural and rustic texture as well as good weather resistance. These products generally require good outdoor durability, so polyester-amino resin systems with excellent weather resistance are often selected.

  1. Home Appliances and 3C Electronics

It is used for electrical appliance housings, computer cases, power supplies, cameras, and other consumer electronic products. The three-dimensional texture can conceal minor defects on metal substrates while creating a unique texture and enhancing product grade and recognition.

  1. Industrial Equipment and Hardware

It is suitable for distribution cabinets, industrial equipment, textile machinery, electromechanical equipment, hardware tools, and other applications. With its ability to conceal surface defects through texturing, it can effectively cover casting defects, welding marks, and other surface imperfections while providing a strong and durable protective coating.

  1. Automotive and Transportation

Some web-pattern powder coatings with excellent performance are also used for automotive interior components, bumpers, as well as certain bicycle and motorcycle components, meeting the dual requirements of high decorative performance and certain mechanical properties.

  1. Emerging and Specialized Fields

These include protective applications for new energy storage equipment and continuous coating of metal coils. In these applications, web-pattern powder coatings are increasingly adopting technological innovations, such as fast-curing formulations, to meet higher efficiency and performance requirements.

How to Choose Web-Pattern Powder Coating

When selecting web-pattern powder coating, it is often difficult to determine which product to choose. Based on our industry experience, we recommend focusing on the following aspects when selecting web-pattern powder coating.

  1. Determine the Application Environment

This is the most basic step and determines the type of resin used.

(1) Outdoor applications (such as architectural aluminum profiles and outdoor furniture): Pure polyester resin systems must be selected to ensure excellent weather resistance and UV resistance.

(2) Indoor applications (such as home appliances, office furniture, and general industrial products): Epoxy resin systems or epoxy-polyester hybrid systems are common choices. Artistic powder coatings often use 60/40 hybrid polyester resin systems because of their high molecular weight, high viscosity, and low flowability, which are more conducive to texture formation. Compared with 50/50 systems, they also provide better mechanical properties.

  1. Determine the Texture Effect

Web patterns can be divided into different styles, which mainly depend on additives and formulation.

(1) Pattern Size: The pattern size can be controlled by adjusting the dosage and particle size of the texturing agent. Generally, a lower dosage produces larger and more blurred patterns, while a higher dosage produces smaller and clearer patterns. The optimal particle size of the floating agent is between 100 and 200 mesh.

(2) Three-Dimensional Effect: Selecting a resin with a higher softening point, such as epoxy resin with a softening point ≥89°C, can reduce flowability and produce a stronger three-dimensional texture.

(3) Special Effects: External additives such as floating agents can be used. This method allows convenient and flexible adjustment of the pattern and also provides a stronger three-dimensional effect.

  1. Consider Process and Production Details

(1) Effects of Pigments and Fillers: Adding pigments with high oil absorption, such as carbon black and organic pigments, can strengthen the three-dimensional effect of the texture but may also reduce the number of patterns. To produce larger patterns, the amount of pigment should be reduced or fillers with lower oil absorption, such as precipitated barium sulfate, should be used.

(2) Film Thickness Control: Textured coatings generally require a slightly thicker film thickness to ensure sufficient coating coverage at the valleys of the texture and adequate protection of the substrate.

(3) Curing Requirements: Always confirm that the curing conditions, including temperature and time, are compatible with the coating equipment.

Common Problems and Solutions for Web-Pattern Powder Coating

The most common problems encountered when using web-pattern powder coating are mainly reflected in the following aspects. Based on our industry experience, we propose corresponding solutions to help effectively address powder coating problems.

  1. Unstable Texture or Complete Loss of Texture

Problem: The same powder produces a normal texture during laboratory testing, but the texture does not form or varies significantly on the customer’s production line. After being stored for a period of time, the texturing effect may deteriorate or even disappear.

Main causes: Sensitivity to curing conditions—the customer’s oven temperature, heating rate, and workpiece thickness can all affect the curing rate difference between the surface and interior, disrupting the conditions required for texture formation; incompatibility between the resin system and floating agent; and floating agent agglomeration or failure due to high temperatures during summer or prolonged storage.

Solutions: Standardize curing conditions—measure the customer’s actual oven temperature and heating curve, appropriately increase the oven temperature or select a low-temperature curing system to reduce the curing-rate difference; select a compatible floating agent according to the melt flowability of the polyester resin used in the base powder; and store the powder in a cool environment to prevent high-temperature agglomeration.

  1. Unstable Control of Texture Size

Problem: The coarseness and clarity of the pattern vary between batches, or the texture differs significantly between different areas of the same workpiece.

Main causes: Improper dosage and particle size control of the floating agent (texturing agent)—a higher dosage produces smaller and clearer patterns, while a lower dosage produces larger and more blurred patterns; the dry blending time and speed of the base powder and floating agent are not standardized; fluctuations in the proportion of recovered powder change the effective concentration of the floating agent; and uneven coating thickness—thin spraying produces smaller patterns or even exposes the substrate, while thick spraying produces larger patterns.

Solutions: Standardize the dry blending process—fix the mixing time and speed and maintain a consistent floating agent dosage for each batch; strictly control the proportion of recovered powder, and add the corresponding amount of floating agent when necessary; and maintain uniform coating thickness. Larger patterns require thicker spraying to prevent substrate exposure.

  1. Surface Defects Caused by Uneven Dispersion of Texturing Agents

Problem: The coating surface has inconsistent gloss, uneven texture distribution, or raised “particle” defects caused by agglomerated texturing agents.

Main causes: Texturing agents are often cotton-like or powdery materials that easily absorb moisture and agglomerate, resulting in uneven dispersion in the powder. This may cause users to mistakenly increase the dosage because they believe the amount is insufficient.

Solutions: Before use, premix the texturing agent with fillers and then add it to the powder to improve dispersion. If necessary, add an appropriate amount of bentonite to adjust the texture and gloss, but excessive addition may cause a rough coating surface and extrusion difficulties.

  1. Substrate Exposure and Insufficient Coating Density

Problem: The coating at the “valleys” of the texture is too thin, exposing the substrate and affecting protective performance. Overall coating density is lower than that of a smooth coating, resulting in poorer weather resistance for outdoor applications.

Main causes: The textured coating has an uneven surface. During spraying, powder accumulates at the “peaks” while the “valleys” are difficult to cover effectively. Outdoor wrinkle powder coatings may have lower surface density, resulting in insufficient protective performance.

Solutions: Ensure sufficient total film thickness—large patterns must be sprayed thick enough to ensure effective coating coverage even at the valleys. For outdoor applications, formulations containing leveling agents can be selected to appropriately reduce substrate exposure and increase texture size, while balancing the amount of leveling agent to prevent the texture from disappearing.
