Description
tert-Butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) occurs as a white crystalline solid. It is soluble in alcohol and in ether, but it is practically insoluble in water.
Application
TBHQ is an oil-soluble antioxidant that can prevent or delay the oxidative deterioration of fats and oils in food. As a food additive, TBHQ has been used in more than 20 countries including the United States. TBHQ was approved in China in 1992 for oil and fat-containing foods, dried fish products, biscuits, instant noodles, canned fat-containing foods, preserved meat products, etc.
In industrial production, TBHQ can be used as an antioxidant and stabilizer in the rubber and plastic industries, used as pharmaceutical intermediates, and used in organic synthesis.
