Its mechanism involves enhancing GABAergic neurotransmission by inhibiting GABA transaminase and increasing glutamate decarboxylase activity, thereby raising brain GABA levels. Sodium valproate also modulates voltage-gated sodium and calcium channels, contributing to its antiepileptic efficacy. Approved for clinical use since the 1960s, it remains a cornerstone in epilepsy treatment due to its efficacy against various seizure types, including generalized and partial seizures. Despite its therapeutic benefits, its use is associated with adverse effects such as hepatotoxicity, pancreatitis, and teratogenicity, necessitating careful monitoring during treatment.
