Description
Rifampicin is a reddish-brown or brownish-red, crystalline powder. It is slightly soluble in water, soluble in methanol, slightly soluble in acetone and in ethanol (96 per cent).
Application
Rifampicin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic drug belonging to the rifamycin family. It has a strong antibacterial effect on Mycobacterium tuberculosis, as well as a curative effect on Gram-positive or negative bacteria and viruses. The combination of rifampicin and other anti-tuberculosis drugs has a synergistic effect and delays the emergence of drug-resistant strains. Rifampicin is mainly used for the treatment of tuberculosis, meningitis and Staphylococcus aureus infections. External use of rifampicin can treat trachoma, etc.

Melting point: Around 177 – 183 °C. Solubility: Practically insoluble in water, freely soluble in chloroform, soluble in methanol, and sparingly soluble in ethanol. It is sensitive to light and air, and its stability may decrease over time if not stored properly.

Pharmacology
|
Rifampicin is a broad – spectrum antibiotic with a strong bactericidal effect on Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It works by inhibiting the DNA – dependent RNA polymerase in bacteria, thus interfering with the transcription process and preventing the synthesis of bacterial proteins. It is a key component in the multi – drug treatment of tuberculosis. It is also used against some Gram – positive and Gram – negative bacteria in certain infections. When combined with other anti – TB drugs like isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol, it significantly improves the treatment outcome for tuberculosis patients and helps in reducing the development of drug – resistant strains.

Side Effects
|
Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. It can also cause liver function abnormalities, with elevated liver enzymes. Skin rashes, flu – like symptoms, and a decrease in platelet count are also possible. In some cases, it may lead to a red – orange discoloration of body fluids (such as urine, sweat, and tears), which is harmless but can be a concern for patients. Rarely, it can cause more serious adverse reactions like acute renal failure and hemolytic anemia.

Usage
|
For the treatment of tuberculosis, the usual adult dosage is 10 mg/kg (up to 600 mg) once daily. In some cases, it may be given in divided doses. The treatment duration for tuberculosis is typically several months as part of a combination regimen. For other infections, the dosage and treatment duration vary according to the type of infection and the patient’s condition.
