Mechanism of Action Quinine hydrochloride is an alkaloid with antimalarial properties. Its exact mechanism of action against malaria parasites is not fully understood, but it is believed to interfere with the parasite’s ability to metabolize hemoglobin.
Indications – Used as an antimalarial drug for treating malaria infections.<br>- Used as a bittering agent in beverages, such as tonic water.<br>- Used in the treatment of nocturnal leg cramps and some muscular disorders.
Dosage Forms – Available as tablets, injections, and in solution form.
Common Side Effects – Cinchonism (headache, nausea, vomiting, tinnitus, hearing loss, blurred vision).<br>- Hypoglycemia, especially in pregnant women.<br>- Gastrointestinal disturbances, dizziness, and allergic reactions.
Serious Side Effects – Cardiac arrhythmias, hypotension, and thrombocytopenia.<br>- Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis.<br>- In rare cases, acute hemolytic reactions (blackwater fever) in patients with G6PD deficiency.
