After curing, it forms a tightly crosslinked structure with excellent heat resistance, weather resistance, and surface leveling. Its main disadvantage is that the raw material TGIC has a certain degree of biological toxicity and is restricted in some parts of Europe where environmental requirements are strict. The conventional curing temperature is relatively high, usually around 200°C.

(2) HAA-Cured Type:

This system was developed with non-toxic and environmentally friendly performance as its core advantage. It has higher reactivity and can cure at lower temperatures, such as 180°C, which helps save energy. Common Problems and Solutions for Pure Polyester Resin Powder Coating

  1. Coating Loss of Gloss and Fading

Problem:

The coating film loses gloss and becomes lighter in color, especially in light-colored or high-gloss coatings after outdoor exposure or high-temperature curing.

Cause:

The baking temperature is too high or the baking time is too long, exceeding the tolerance limit of pure polyester powder, which is normally maintained at a constant temperature not exceeding 220°C. Alternatively, the proportion of recycled powder is inappropriate. Generally, adding more than 5 kg of recycled powder to a batch of powder can easily cause loss of gloss.

Solution:

Strictly control the baking temperature and time. For thin-walled components such as aluminum profiles, the time in the oven generally does not need to exceed 15–20 minutes. When mixing recycled powder with new powder, control the amount added; it is recommended that it not exceed 20% of the total amount of new powder. When switching between powders from different manufacturers, thoroughly clean the powder supply system to avoid mutual interference between resin systems that may cause loss of gloss.

  1. Coating Craters and Pinholes

Problem:

Recessed craters or small pinholes appear on the coating surface, affecting decorative appearance and protective performance.

Cause:

The surface tension of pure polyester resin is relatively high (approximately 43 mN/m), while the surface tension of substrates such as iron is approximately 40 mN/m. As a result, the coating has difficulty spreading sufficiently on the substrate, leading to pitting and crater formation. For HAA curing systems, water molecules are released during curing. When the coating is too thick, moisture cannot escape in time, making pinholes highly likely to occur.

Solution:

Select polyester resin with a narrow molecular weight distribution and moderate viscosity, combined with degassing additives such as amide wax. This can increase the film thickness at which thick-coating pinholes occur to above 140 μm. Introducing hyperbranched polyester additives into the formulation can reduce melt viscosity by 20%–50% and reduce crater and pinhole defects. For HAA systems, selecting polyester resin with a lower acid value (28–32) and lower viscosity can effectively delay the gel time and improve surface leveling.

  1. Yellowing of HAA Systems

Problem:

Pure polyester powder using an HAA curing system develops yellowing after curing, and the whiteness decreases.

Cause:

The HAA molecular structure contains exposed nitrogen atoms, which are prone to oxidation and loss of stability during high-temperature curing. Yellowing is more pronounced when natural gas is used as the heating medium for curing.

Solution:

When an HAA system must be used, such as for exports to Europe to comply with REACH regulations, select polyester resin with a lower acid value and better heat resistance to suppress yellowing. Strictly control the curing temperature and avoid over-baking. Adjust the extrusion temperature to 120–125°C to prevent localized yellowing caused by uneven dispersion.

  1. Hazy Coating Surface

Problem:

The coating surface is not sufficiently clear and presents a hazy or orange-peel-like texture, resulting in poor distinctness of image.

Main Causes:

HAA has relatively poor compatibility with polyester resin, resulting in inadequate melt blending, or the powder particle size distribution is too broad and the pigments and fillers are unevenly dispersed.

Solution:

Select polyester resin with a softening point of 115–120°C and control the extrusion temperature at 120–125°C. Improve the melt blending effect by increasing screw shear force. Increase the feeding speed to improve the material filling rate inside the screw barrel and enhance shear dispersion. Select fillers with good dispersion properties, such as precipitated barium sulfate, to improve coating clarity.
