Introduction
Zinc-containing powder coating primer — MT-PZ — is an epoxy zinc-rich primer for mild steel that combines cathodic protection with a barrier film in a duplex system. The zinc-rich epoxy formulation gives the conductivity needed for cathodic protection, and a dedicated anti-corrosive function protects even when the film is scratched. It is approved by Qualisteelcoat on steel, PE-0097, two-coat system up to C4-H, with mechanical (blast) pretreatment.

Powder Properties
| Chemical type | Thermosetting epoxy |
| Appearance / gloss | Smooth, 45–65 GU at 60° |
| Colour | Grey (about RAL 7012) |
| Film thickness / density | 70–120 µm; 2.1 g/cm³ |
| Application | Corona electrostatic spray |
| Storage / shelf life | Dry, cool ≤ 30°C; 12 months below 25°C |
Pretreatment
| Substrate | Mechanical pretreatment | Chemical pretreatment |
|---|---|---|
| Mild steel / cast steel | Grit blast Sa 2½ (ISO 8501-1), roughness Rz 35–60 µm / Ra 6–12 µm | Not required |
| Electro-zinc, hot-dip galvanised, zinc-sprayed steel | Not suitable for this primer | Use a dedicated pretreatment system |
Application & Curing
| Spray settings | Fluidising air 1.5 kg/cm² initially, then 1.0 kg/cm²; transport air 0.5–0.8 kg/cm²; voltage 65–70 kV. Tribo not recommended. |
| Cure window | Primer must be cured (or at least gelled) before topcoat; object temperature 110–180°C, oven air ≤ 180°C, convection with optional infrared boost. |
| Film build | 70–120 µm — protection is linked to the recommended film thickness. |
| Recycling | Trial recycling before production; at least 70% virgin powder in the mix; clean gun nozzles every 30 minutes. |
Practical note: zinc-rich primer works because the zinc particles touch each other and the steel — that is what gives cathodic protection, so film thickness and blast profile matter: too thin breaks the zinc contact and loses the sacrificial action; too thick bloats cost and brittleness. Keep the Rz 35–60 µm anchor after Sa 2½ and spray immediately after blasting (within a few hours), before flash rust. As a primer it is designed to carry a topcoat; do not leave it as the sole outdoor finish — epoxy chalks in UV. Blend recycled powder with at least 70% virgin and clean nozzles on schedule, because heavy zinc content wears nozzles faster and recycled-rich mixes can change charging and film build.
