Powder coating is a great way to give a professional looking finish to metals and also to other surfaces that can safely be baked at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. You may need to finesse the process to get the glass to take the powder, but once you do, it’s worth it! In this Instructable, you’ll learn how to powder coat a glass jar as a finished piece, or as a surface for laser etching, hand-painting or other techniques.

Glass, like hardly any other material, stands for transparency, lightness, and openness. However, in many design and industrial applications, a purely transparent surface is not sufficient. Colors, effects, protective functions, or targeted light filtration are required. This is exactly where powder coating opens up new design and functional possibilities.

Glass differs fundamentally from traditional metal substrates: it has no electrical conductivity and therefore places special demands on the coating process, pre-treatment, and application. Standard processes cannot be transferred without adaptation.

This horizontal, conveyor-based operation handles glass sheets up to 225 cm wide and 4 m long, with thicknesses from 4-19 mm, and supports post-coating processing like cutting or digital printing integration for enhanced aesthetics.

Unlike traditional liquid coatings, powder coating on glass produces no emissions during application and curing, aligning with sustainability standards such as ISO 14025 environmental product declarations.

Key benefits include superior mechanical durability, with the coating passing rigorous tests for abrasion (EN 1096-2, Class A, 500 cycles), chemical resistance (DIN 68861-1, 1B), and condensed water resistance (EN 1096-2, Class A, 504 hours), while remaining free of heavy metals like lead, chromium, and cadmium.

1、Application technology

Since glass is non-conductive, alternative methods are required—such as hot coating or conductive pre-treatment. TIGER has experience with a range of solution approaches that can be applied depending on component type, geometry, and requirements.

2、Pre-Treatment

Careful cleaning of the glass surface—ideally using distilled water—is essential to avoid visual defects, especially with transparent or light-colored coatings.

3、Object size

While small glass surfaces are relatively easy to handle, larger components significantly increase the demands on application and curing. Oven size and process control must also be taken into account.
