Dinitrogen tetroxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula N2O4. It is a colorless gas at room temperature and pressure. It is mainly used to prepare nitric acid, nitrating agents, oxidants, catalysts, acrylate polymerization inhibitors, etc.

This substance is harmful to the environment, and special attention should be paid to the pollution of surface water, soil, atmosphere and drinking water.

Dinitrogen tetroxide can spontaneously combust with many fuels and is an excellent oxidant. However, its liquid temperature range is very narrow and it is very easy to solidify and evaporate. Dinitrogen tetroxide at room temperature is in a state of continuous vaporization. Dinitrogen tetroxide suspended in the air is immediately decomposed into nitrogen dioxide gas under reduced pressure. Nitrogen dioxide gas is brown-red and has neurological anesthetic toxicity. It is used as a raw material for the manufacture of nitric acid, anhydrous metal salts and nitro coordination complexes. In organic chemistry, it is used as an oxidant, nitrating agent and inhibitor of acrylate polymerization. In the military industry, it is used to make explosives. Gas NO2 is obtained from the process of producing concentrated nitric acid by direct synthesis, and liquid N2O4 is obtained after condensation and distillation. It is one of the most commonly used storable oxidizers. It is often used with hydrazine fuel to form a bicomponent liquid propellant, which is used in launch vehicles for launching communication satellites, strategic missiles, etc.
