Methyl o-toluate, a methyl ester of ortho-methylbenzoic acid, is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a distinctive aroma resembling toluene. As a key intermediate, it finds extensive applications in pharmaceuticals, fragrances, and dyes due to its ability to participate in esterification, reduction, and substitution reactions. For instance, it serves as a precursor in the synthesis of benzocaine, a local anesthetic, and is utilized in the production of azo dyes and perfumes. Its chemical stability under normal conditions, coupled with a flash point of 82°C, makes it manageable in industrial settings, though proper ventilation and protective gear are recommended during handling to mitigate irritation risks.
