Methyl eugenol (ME), a phenylpropanoid compound with the molecular formula C₁₁H₁₄O₂ and a molecular weight of 178.23 g/mol, is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a spicy, clove-like aroma. Naturally occurring in plants like basil and pimento, ME is used as a fragrance ingredient in perfumes, soaps, and food flavorings due to its warm, spicy notes. Beyond cosmetics, ME serves as a sex pheromone lure for controlling oriental fruit flies (Bactrocera dorsalis) in agriculture. Research highlights its pharmacological potential, including anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and autophagy-inducing activities, though its carcinogenic risks in animals limit human exposure. ME is insoluble in water but soluble in ethanol and oils, with a boiling point of 254–255 °C and a melting point of -4 °C. Storage requires protection from light, heat, and strong oxidizing agents to prevent degradation.
