meso-2,3-Dibromosuccinic acid, also known as 2,3-dibromosuccinic acid, is a crucial halogenated organic compound with the chemical formula C₄H₄Br₂O₄ and a molecular weight of 275.88 g/mol. It serves as a vital intermediate in organic synthesis, particularly in the production of pharmaceuticals such as dithiodiglycolic acid sodium salt, a chelating agent for heavy metal poisoning. Recent advancements highlight its role in synthesizing vitamin H (biotin), where it acts as a key building block. The compound is synthesized via bromination of fumaric acid using bromine and hydrobromic acid, achieving high yields (up to 95.1%) and purity (99.54%). Its physical properties—such as melting point (255–260 °C), solubility in water (20 g/L at 17 °C), and stability under normal conditions—make it suitable for industrial applications. However, its corrosive nature necessitates strict handling protocols to prevent skin and eye damage.
