Description

Isoniazid is a white or almost white, crystalline powder or colourless crystals. It is freely soluble in water, sparingly soluble in alcohol.

Application

Isoniazid is the preferred drug for the treatment of tuberculosis, suitable for all types of tuberculosis, such as tuberculosis, lymph, bone, kidney, intestine and other tuberculosis, tuberculous meningitis, pleurisy and peritonitis.

Packing and Storage

Preserve in tight, light-resistant containers. Store at 25°C, excursions permitted between 15°C and 30°C.

Introduction Isoniazid (INH) is a first-line antibiotic used to treat tuberculosis (TB) and prevent its progression in high-risk individuals.
Mechanism of Action Isoniazid is a prodrug activated by the bacterial enzyme KatG, generating radicals that inhibit the synthesis of mycolic acids, essential components of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis cell wall.
Medical Uses – Active TB Infection: Used in combination with other drugs.<br>- Latent TB Infection: Used for preventive therapy in high-risk individuals.<br>- Off-label Uses: Treatment of nontuberculous mycobacterial infections.
Dosage Forms – Oral tablets (100 mg, 300 mg)<br>- Oral solution (50 mg/5 mL).
Common Side Effects – Nerve problems (peripheral neuropathy)<br>- Nausea, vomiting, upset stomach.
Serious Side Effects – Liver Damage: Symptoms include jaundice, dark urine, loss of appetite.<br>- Severe Allergic Reactions: Difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat.
