Sulfur dioxide (chemical formula: SO2) is a common sulfur oxide. It is a colorless gas with a strong pungent odor. It is one of the main pollutants in the atmosphere. The gas is ejected during volcanic eruptions, and sulfur dioxide is also produced in many industrial processes. Since coal and oil usually contain sulfur compounds, sulfur dioxide is generated when they are burned. When sulfur dioxide is dissolved in water, sulfurous acid (the main component of acid rain) is formed. If SO2 is further oxidized, sulfuric acid is usually generated in the presence of a catalyst such as nitrogen dioxide. This is one of the reasons for the concern about the environmental effects of using these fuels as energy sources.

Uses:

It is mainly used in the preparation of inorganic sulfides such as H2SO4 and Na2S, organic synthesis, fumigants, pesticides, preservatives for fruits and vegetables, and disinfectants for disinfection. It is very easy to liquefy. It does not burn in the air. Bleaching agent, paper industry, tanning, refrigerant, petroleum refining, magnesium smelting, preservative, standard gas, calibration gas, online instrument standard gas.
