Applications

Primarily used as fuel, such as natural gas and coal gas, widely used in civilian and industrial applications. As a chemical raw material, it can be used to produce acetylene, hydrogen, synthetic ammonia, carbon black, chloroform, carbon disulfide, methyl chloride, methylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, and hydrogen cyanide, etc.

Safety Information

CAS Number: 74-82-8.

Physical and Chemical Properties: Colorless and odorless gas, soluble in alcohol and ether. Melting point (℃): -182.5; Boiling point (℃): -161.5; Relative density (water=1): 0.42 (-164℃); Relative vapor density (air=1): 0.55; Saturation vapor pressure (kPa): 53.32 (-168.8℃); Critical temperature (℃): -82.6; Combustion heat (kJ/mol): 889.5; Critical pressure (MPa): 4.59; Flash point (℃): -188; Ignition temperature (℃): 538; Upper explosion limit (v%): 15; Lower explosion limit (v%): 5.3.

Combustion and Explosion Hazards: Flammable, forms explosive mixtures with air, poses a risk of combustion and explosion when exposed to heat sources and open flames. Reacts violently with bromine pentoxide, chlorine, hypochlorous acid, nitrogen trifluoride, liquid oxygen, difluorine oxide, and other strong oxidants.

Firefighting Methods: Cut off the gas supply. If the gas supply cannot be cut off, do not extinguish the fire at the leak site. Spray water to cool the container, and if possible, remove the container from the fire area to an open space. Fire extinguishing agents: water spray, foam, carbon dioxide, dry powder.

Health Hazards: Methane is essentially non-toxic to humans, but at high concentrations, it significantly reduces the oxygen content in the air, causing asphyxiation. When the concentration of methane in the air reaches 25% to 30%, it can cause headaches, dizziness, fatigue, lack of concentration, accelerated breathing and heartbeat, and ataxia. Failure to leave the area promptly can lead to asphyxiation and death. Skin contact with liquefied methane can cause frostbite.

First Aid Measures: Skin contact: Seek medical treatment if frostbite occurs. Inhalation: Quickly move to a fresh air area. Keep the airway clear. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen. If breathing stops, perform artificial respiration immediately. Seek medical attention.
