Description

Fosfomycin Calcium is white or almost white powder. It is slightly soluble in water, practically insoluble in acetone, in methanol and in methylene chloride.

Application

Fosfomycin calcium is an antibiotic used for simple lower urinary tract and intestinal infections caused by sensitive bacteria. It is mainly used to treat the following diseases:

1. Intestinal infection: bacterial enteritis, bacillary dysentery.

2. Urinary tract infection: cystitis, pyelonephritis, urethritis.

3. Dermatology and soft tissue infection: furuncle, anthrax, hidradenitis, lymphadenitis, folliculitis.

4. Respiratory tract infection: nasopharyngitis, tonsillitis, tracheitis, early chronic bronchitis.

Fosfomycin Calcium: A Veterinary Antibiotic

Fosfomycin Calcium is an important antibiotic in veterinary medicine, utilized for treating various bacterial infections in animals. It is related to Fosfomycin Sodium, with some similarities and differences in properties and applications.

1. General Characteristics

Aspect Details
Classification Phosphonic acid derivative antibiotic, same class as Fosfomycin Sodium
Source Chemically synthesized. It is not derived from natural microbial sources.
Formulation Available as powders, which can be formulated into oral suspensions or added to animal feed for easy administration. It is mainly used for oral application in livestock, poultry, and companion animals.
Solubility Sparingly soluble in water compared to Fosfomycin Sodium. However, it can still be made into suitable oral formulations for animals. The calcium salt form may offer different pharmacokinetic properties in animals.

2. Mechanism of Action

Action Explanation
Inhibition of Cell Wall Synthesis Similar to Fosfomycin Sodium, Fosfomycin Calcium inhibits an early and critical step in bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to and inactivates the enzyme UDP – N – acetylglucosamine enolpyruvyl transferase (MurA). This enzyme is responsible for adding an enolpyruvyl group to UDP – N – acetylglucosamine, a key step in the synthesis of peptidoglycan, a major component of the bacterial cell wall. By blocking this enzyme, Fosfomycin Calcium prevents proper cell wall formation, leading to cell lysis and death.
Selective Activity It has a broad – spectrum antibacterial effect, targeting both Gram – positive and Gram – negative bacteria. Since the cell wall synthesis pathway it targets is common to both types of bacteria, it can effectively inhibit the growth of a wide range of pathogens.

3. Clinical Applications and Considerations

Category Details
Applications – Treating gastrointestinal infections in livestock and poultry. It is effective against Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., and other Gram – negative pathogens that cause diarrhea and intestinal disorders. For example, in piglets, it can help manage post – weaning diarrhea caused by pathogenic E. coli. – Used to treat urinary tract infections in companion animals like dogs and cats. It can combat E. coli, a common cause of urinary tract infections in these animals. – In some cases, it may be used to assist in managing respiratory tract infections in poultry, targeting pathogens such as E. coli and Pasteurella multocida.
Considerations – Overuse can lead to the development of antibiotic – resistant bacteria. Strict compliance with the dosage and treatment duration prescribed by veterinarians is essential. – High doses or long – term use may cause gastrointestinal upset in animals, including symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, and reduced appetite. – Caution is needed when using it in combination with other drugs. There may be potential drug – drug interactions, especially with drugs that act on the same metabolic pathways or have similar mechanisms of action. For example, when combined with other antibiotics that target cell wall synthesis, the effects may be enhanced or altered, and careful monitoring is required.

Fosfomycin Calcium plays a significant role in maintaining the health and productivity of livestock, poultry, and companion animals by effectively treating bacterial infections.
