Mechanism of Action
Fluconazole works by inhibiting the enzyme lanosterol 14 – α – demethylase in fungi. This enzyme is crucial for the synthesis of ergosterol, a major component of the fungal cell membrane. By blocking its production, Fluconazole disrupts the fungal cell membrane integrity, leading to the death of the fungus.

Medical Uses
Widely used in the treatment of various fungal infections. It is effective against candidiasis (including oral, esophageal, and vaginal candidiasis), cryptococcal meningitis, and other systemic fungal infections. It can be administered orally or intravenously, depending on the severity and type of the infection. In immunocompromised patients, such as those with HIV/AIDS or undergoing chemotherapy, Fluconazole is often prescribed prophylactically to prevent fungal infections.
