How to Choose Colorful Powder Coating
When selecting colorful powder coating, we often do not know how to choose. Based on our industry experience, we recommend focusing on the following aspects when selecting colorful powder coating.
- Define the Application Environment
(1) Indoor Environments (such as Home Appliances, Indoor Furniture, and Electronic Products): Focus on decorative performance and mechanical properties, such as hardness and scratch resistance. Epoxy resin or epoxy-polyester hybrid powder coatings can be selected, offering high cost-effectiveness and balanced performance.
(2) Outdoor Environments (such as Building Curtain Walls, Outdoor Communication Equipment, and Automotive Components): Weather resistance is the primary requirement, and the coating must be able to resist UV radiation and wind and rain exposure. Powder coatings based on polyester resin, super-durable polyester, or acrylic resin systems should be selected.
- Determine Color and Decorative Effects
These can directly enhance the attractiveness and value of products.
(1) Color Sources: Standard colors can be selected from RAL, Pantone, and other color cards. Special effects, such as metallic sparkle, pearlescent, and candy colors, require specific pigments.
(2) Surface Texture: These include high gloss, matte, sand texture, orange peel, hammer tone, and even soft-touch finishes. Textured coatings can also effectively conceal minor scratches.
- Evaluate Protection and Functional Requirements
In addition to appearance, the coating must also perform the essential function of protecting the substrate.
(1) Basic Protection: Confirm mechanical performance indicators such as hardness (e.g., 2H pencil hardness), adhesion (0 grade is the best), impact resistance, and flexibility.
(2) Special Protection: If functions such as anti-static, insulation, high-temperature resistance, or antibacterial properties are required, corresponding functional powder coatings must be selected.
Common Problems and Solutions for Colorful Powder Coating
The most common problems encountered during the use of colorful powder coating are mainly reflected in the following aspects. Based on our industry experience, we propose corresponding solutions to help effectively solve the powder coating problems you encounter.
- Color Difference
Problem: Visible color differences occur between coatings from different production batches after application, affecting product appearance consistency. Customers typically require the color difference value ΔE to be controlled below 0.5. while leading companies can control it to 0.3.
Main Causes: Fluctuations in curing temperature or time, pigment discoloration caused by insufficient oven exhaust, and uneven pigment dispersion.
Solutions: Strictly control the curing process, including temperature and time, and regularly inspect the oven exhaust system; use a colorimeter for color measurement and color matching management; ensure that pigments are sufficiently wetted and dispersed during compounding.
- Cratering
Problem: Circular depressions resembling volcanic craters appear on the coating surface, affecting decorative effects and protective performance.
Main Causes: External oil contamination, such as oil in compressed air or incomplete pretreatment of the workpiece; cross-contamination with incompatible materials, such as different types of powder; and failure of leveling agents.
Solutions: Ensure that compressed air is dry and oil-free, install an oil-water separator, and inspect it regularly; keep the spraying area clean to avoid cross-contamination between different powders; strengthen degreasing during workpiece pretreatment; select appropriate wetting agents and pigment dispersants.
- Orange Peel
Problem: After curing, the coating surface presents an uneven texture similar to an orange peel, lacking a smooth, mirror-like appearance.
Main Causes: The coating is too thin, the heating rate during baking is too fast, the powder has deteriorated due to heat, the curing temperature is too low, or the melting and leveling time is insufficient.
Solutions: Control the coating thickness at 60~80μm; inspect the operating conditions of the curing oven and adjust the heating curve to ensure sufficient melting and leveling time; add an appropriate leveling agent to reduce the melt viscosity of the powder.
- Pinholes
Problem: Small needle-like holes appear on the coating surface, penetrating the coating and damaging its protective integrity.
Main Causes: Gas fails to escape during the curing process. Sources include the volatilization of low-molecular-weight substances in the powder, moisture/volatile substances adsorbed on the workpiece surface, and excessive coating thickness (pinholes are more likely to occur when the thickness exceeds 100μm).
Solutions: Control the coating thickness to no more than 100μm; for workpieces requiring strict surface treatment, porous materials such as cast iron can be preheated; add degassing agents such as benzoin to the formulation; regularly drain water from the compressed air system.
- Process Problems Caused by Special Effect Pigments
Problem: Colorful powder coatings with metallic sparkle, pearlescent effects, or color-changing effects at different viewing angles may experience powder spitting, gun nozzle blockage, or pigment aggregation and uneven distribution in the coating during spraying.
Main Causes: Effect pigments, such as aluminum powder and mica flakes, have different charging behaviors from base powder particles during electrostatic spraying, causing separation during dry blending; pigment particles may also be damaged during melt extrusion.
Solutions: Effect pigments are generally added using the dry-blending method (added after extrusion) rather than the in-extrusion method to prevent damage to the pigment structure; optimize the dry-blending process and use pigments with charge-adjusting agents to improve their adhesion to and uniform distribution among powder particles; adjust spraying parameters to resolve powder spitting and blockage problems.
