Mechanism of Action	Candesartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that antagonizes the type 1 angiotensin II receptor, blocking the effects of angiotensin II. This reduces blood pressure and fluid retention by inhibiting vasoconstriction, increasing renal blood flow, and reducing aldosterone secretion.
Indications	– FDA-approved for managing hypertension in adults and children aged 12 months and older.<br>- Used in heart failure (NYHA classes 2-4), reducing cardiovascular mortality and hospitalizations.<br>- Off-label uses include treatment of cerebrovascular accident, diabetic nephropathy, left ventricular hypertrophy, and migraines.
Dosage Forms	Available as tablets (4 mg, 8 mg, 16 mg, 32 mg) and as candesartan cilexetil (prodrug) tablets.
Common Dosage	– Initial dose: 8 mg once daily for hypertension, which may be increased to 16 mg or 32 mg.<br>- For heart failure: 4 mg once daily, titrated up to 32 mg.<br>- Can be taken with or without food.
Common Side Effects	– Dizziness, headache, fatigue.<br>- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.<br>- Elevated liver enzymes, hyperkalemia.
Serious Side Effects	– Angioedema (facial, lip, tongue swelling).<br>- Hypotension, especially in patients with low blood volume.<br>- Acute kidney injury.<br>- Hyperkalemia.<br>- Hepatic dysfunction.
Contraindications	– Hypersensitivity to candesartan.<br>- Pregnancy (especially in the second and third trimesters) due to risk of fetal harm.<br>- Severe liver or kidney dysfunction.
Special Precautions	– Monitor blood pressure and potassium levels.<br>- Use with caution in patients with renal artery stenosis, liver disease, or heart failure.<br>- Avoid concomitant use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes or kidney disease.<br>- Avoid in patients with severe renal impairment.
