| Mechanism of Action | Artesunate is a semisynthetic derivative of artemisinin. It is rapidly metabolized to dihydroartemisinin (DHA), which generates free radicals that inhibit the normal function of Plasmodium parasites. The endoperoxide bridge of DHA reacts with heme, generating free radicals that inhibit protein and nucleic acid synthesis of the parasites during all erythrocytic stages. |
