4-Methylimidazole (4-MI) is a heterocyclic compound with the molecular formula C₄H₆N₂ and a molecular weight of 82.1 g/mol. It is widely used as an intermediate in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and epoxy resin curing agents. Notably, it serves as a key precursor for synthesizing cimetidine, a histamine H₂-receptor antagonist. 4-MI appears as a white to off-white crystalline solid, with a melting point of 54–56 °C and a boiling point of 263 °C. Despite its industrial utility, 4-MI is classified as a potential carcinogen (IARC Group 2B) due to limited evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals. It is corrosive, requiring careful handling to avoid skin and eye contact. The compound is soluble in water and polar solvents, facilitating its use in various chemical processes.
