1-Adamantanamine hydrochloride (CAS No. 665-66-7), also known as amantadine hydrochloride, is a white crystalline compound with the molecular formula C₁₀H₁₈ClN and a molecular weight of 187.71 g/mol. It is widely recognized for its antiviral and antiparkinsonian properties. As an antiviral agent, it inhibits influenza A virus replication by blocking the M2 ion channel, preventing viral uncoating. Additionally, amantadine hydrochloride acts as a dopamine release promoter, making it effective in managing Parkinson’s disease symptoms such as tremors and rigidity. Its melting point exceeds 300°C, and it is soluble in water and ethanol but insoluble in benzene and ether. Safety precautions include avoiding inhalation and skin contact due to its irritant properties, and proper storage in a cool, dry place is recommended to maintain stability.
