Introduction

Molecular Formula: C3H5Na2O4P

Molecular Weight: 182.0

CAS No.: 26016-99-9

It has wide antibacterial spectrum, high bioavailability, fast absorption, strong antibacterial power, rapid sterilization, low residue, low toxic and side effects, little stimulation to the body, and has killing effect on Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria.

Description

It is white or almost white, very hygroscopic powder. It is s very soluble in water, sparingly soluble in methanol, practically insoluble in ethanol (96 per cent) and in methylene chloride.

Application

It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, which has certain germicidal efficacy for most Gram-negative bacteria and Gram-positive bacteria. It can be used for respiratory infection, skin infection, urinary infection, intestinal infection caused by sensitive bacteria. It can be used in combination with other antibiotics to treat severe infections caused by sensitive bacteria. It can also be combined with vancomycin in the treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection.

Packing and Storage

Preserve in airtight, light-resistant containers. If the substance is sterile, store in a sterile, airtight, tamper-proof container.

Fosfomycin Sodium: A Veterinary Antibiotic

Fosfomycin Sodium is an important antibiotic in veterinary medicine, used for treating a variety of bacterial infections in animals.

1. General Characteristics

Aspect Details
Classification Phosphonic acid derivative antibiotic
Source Synthesized chemically. It is not derived from a natural microbial source like some other antibiotics.
Formulation Available as powders, which can be formulated into injectable solutions for parenteral use in animals. It can also be prepared as oral formulations for easy administration, especially for livestock and poultry.
Solubility Soluble in water, which is beneficial for preparing solutions for different routes of administration. This property allows for easy preparation of injectable solutions and incorporation into drinking water or feed.

2. Mechanism of Action

Action Explanation
Inhibition of Cell Wall Synthesis Fosfomycin Sodium inhibits an early and crucial step in bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to and inactivates the enzyme UDP – N – acetylglucosamine enolpyruvyl transferase (MurA). This enzyme is responsible for adding an enolpyruvyl group to UDP – N – acetylglucosamine, a key step in the synthesis of peptidoglycan, which is a major component of the bacterial cell wall. By blocking this enzyme, fosfomycin sodium prevents the proper formation of the cell wall, leading to cell lysis and death.
Selective Activity It has a broad – spectrum antibacterial effect, acting against both Gram – positive and Gram – negative bacteria. Since the cell wall synthesis pathway targeted by fosfomycin sodium is present in both types of bacteria, it can effectively inhibit the growth of a wide range of pathogens.

3. Clinical Applications and Considerations

Category Details
Applications – Treating urinary tract infections in animals. It is effective against Escherichia coli, which is a common cause of urinary tract infections in dogs and cats. – Used to manage respiratory tract infections in livestock and poultry. In poultry, it can be used against Escherichia coli and Pasteurella multocida, common pathogens in respiratory diseases. In cattle, it helps combat respiratory infections caused by Mannheimia haemolytica. – Treating gastrointestinal infections in animals. It is effective against Salmonella spp. and other Gram – negative pathogens that cause diarrhea and intestinal disorders.
Considerations – Overuse can contribute to the development of antibiotic – resistant bacteria. Adhering to proper dosage and treatment duration as prescribed by veterinarians is crucial. – High doses or long – term use may cause gastrointestinal upset in animals, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. – Caution is required when using it in combination with other drugs. There may be potential drug – drug interactions, especially with drugs that affect the same metabolic pathways or have similar mechanisms of action.

Fosfomycin Sodium plays a significant role in maintaining the health and productivity of livestock, poultry, and other animals by effectively treating bacterial infections.
