Synthesis Method

Starting Material: o-Nitrotoluene

Procedure:

1. Chlorination:
   • React o-nitrotoluene with chlorine gas at 50–60 °C in the presence of anhydrous FeCl₃ (catalyst).
   • Monitor reaction progress by density:
     • 1.27–1.29 (48–50 °C) or
     • 1.31–1.32 (26–28 °C).
2. Purification:
   • Wash with 5% HCl (3×) followed by water (2×).
   • Neutralize with aqueous NaOH to pH 7.
   • Separate layers, evaporate water, and perform pressurized fractional distillation.
   • Collect fraction at 120–150 °C (5.33–8.0 kPa).
   • Cool to crystallize, then filter.

Yield: >40%
