Synthesis Method
Starting Material: o-Nitrotoluene
Procedure:
- Chlorination:
- React o-nitrotoluene with chlorine gas at 50–60 °C in the presence of anhydrous FeCl₃ (catalyst).
- Monitor reaction progress by density:
- 1.27–1.29 (48–50 °C) or
- 1.31–1.32 (26–28 °C).
- Purification:
- Wash with 5% HCl (3×) followed by water (2×).
- Neutralize with aqueous NaOH to pH 7.
- Separate layers, evaporate water, and perform pressurized fractional distillation.
- Collect fraction at 120–150 °C (5.33–8.0 kPa).
- Cool to crystallize, then filter.
Yield: >40%
Storage & Safety
- Storage: Keep in a cool, dry, ventilated area away from oxidizers.
- Handling: Use PPE (gloves, goggles) due to volatility and reactivity.
