Mechanism of Action Tetracaine HCl blocks sodium ion channels required for the initiation and conduction of neuronal impulses, thereby providing local anesthesia.
Clinical Uses It is used as a rapid and short-acting topical ophthalmic anesthetic for procedures requiring temporary numbing of the eye.
Dosage Forms Available as a 0.5% ophthalmic solution for topical use in the eye.
Storage Conditions Store at 15° to 25°C (59° to 77°F) and protect from light. Do not use if the solution contains crystals, is cloudy, or discolored.
Special Precautions – Do not use intracamerally as it may damage corneal endothelial cells.<br>- Prolonged use or abuse may lead to corneal epithelial toxicity and permanent corneal damage.<br>- Patients should avoid touching the eye for at least 10–20 minutes after application to prevent accidental injuries due to insensitivity.<br>- For administration by healthcare providers only.
Side Effects Transient stinging, burning, conjunctival redness, eye irritation, eye pain, and ocular discomfort.
Contraindications Should not be used in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation.
Toxicity Overdose or prolonged use may lead to corneal opacification, ulceration, and visual loss.
Monitoring Continuous ECG and pulse oximetry, intermittent blood pressure monitoring, and inspection of respiratory rate are recommended during administration.
